Shrublands Mansion, Canterbury

Residential

One of Melbourne’s most prominent landmark homes, the Shrublands Mansion on Balwyn Road, Canterbury was originally built in 1863.

The first part of construction consisted of a full renovation and restoration of the existing building, which was in a state of disrepair and deterioration. The refurbishment stayed true to the original design of this Italianate masterpiece and the period features were consistent throughout.

The second stage involved a large-scale extension. The exterior worked to complement the existing mansion, while the interior featured modern fittings and fixtures, ensuring this section of the estate is highly functional. Undeniably luxurious additions included a 6-car garage, commercial grade kitchen, 2 stunning bathrooms and powder room, gymnasium, massage room, costume room, workshop, laundry, boardroom, reception, concrete formed balconies and terraces, and multiple ornate fireplaces.

The final stage included adding a large indoor pool and pool house/caretaker’s cottage, to finally complete this truly one-of-a-kind piece of history.
